   <div class=\"wak-copy wak-body-standard-text\"><p>The Scientific Exploration Society (SES) is marking the 50th anniversary of a pioneering British expedition that navigated the perilous 4,700km Zaire River \u2013 now known as the Congo River \u2013 through some of the world\u2019s most treacherous rapids. The large-scale expedition, which took place in 1974, was not only a remarkable feat of navigation but also an important scientific undertaking, contributing research on \u2018River Blindness\u2019 (onchocerciasis) and a range of other medical and environmental studies.<\/p>\n<p>Led by Colonel John Blashford-Snell, the expedition involved over 160 individuals, including servicemen, scientists and medical experts from ten countries. These boats proved crucial for navigating the river\u2019s formidable cataracts.
